Adoption Story: From Fresh Start to Favorite Spot

Sometimes the perfect match happens when you least expect it. For Booger and his new family, it happened during a vacation — and resulted in an extended hotel stay, a five-hour drive home, and one very happy ending.

Booger arrived at Centerville Pet Rescue in May at just 21 weeks old. A sweet young kitten with adorable white paws and black toe beans, he could be a little shy when meeting someone new. Once comfortable, though, his affectionate and playful personality quickly emerged. He loved snuggling, playing with toys, and — perhaps foreshadowing his future — climbing cat trees.

Booger’s future family wasn’t even looking for a cat when they found him. They were visiting Pennsylvania from New York and decided to make their first trip to That Fish Place – That Pet Place. While exploring the store, Booger caught the attention of a mother and daughter passing the CPR Adoption Center.

“It was love at first sight,” his adopter remembers.

After talking with CPR staff, they knew they couldn’t leave without submitting an adoption application. During the remainder of their vacation, they returned to the store every day just to visit Booger and talk to him through the window.

Then, while having lunch before beginning the trip home to New York, the email arrived: their application had been approved!

There was just one complication. Booger had attracted the attention of several potential adopters, and there was no guarantee he would still be available when adoptions opened on Friday. Rather than take that chance, the family changed their plans, extended their stay at another hotel, and arrived at the store at 9:30 Friday morning. They waited on the bench for two and a half hours until the Adoption Center opened at noon.

Their patience paid off. Booger was going home with them.

The trip to New York would take about five hours in heavy traffic, and Booger quickly made his opinion of the cat carrier known. After about 30 minutes, his new family gave in. Booger settled into the back seat with his new grandma, curling himself around her neck like a pillow and happily riding the rest of the way to his new home.

His family wondered how long it might take him to adjust to a new house filled with new people and new feline siblings. As it turned out, they didn’t need to worry.

Within days, he had explored every inch of the house. He quickly bonded with his new brothers and sisters and became equally attached to his human family, following them from room to room and carefully supervising their daily chores.

Today, Booger is making the most of his new life. He flies “like a squirrel” from one cat tree to another, watches birds through the windows, and is fascinated by the fish swimming in the family’s spherical aquarium. He loves cuddling and making biscuits, and chasing miniature ice cubes has become a favorite summer pastime.

He’s also quite the athlete. Booger plays tag with his feline brothers, practices his gymnastic moves on the cat towers, and has even been known to climb the curtains in an attempt to walk along the curtain rods. Most impressively, he taught himself to play fetch — toss his toy and Booger will race after it and bring it right back.

For a kitten who was once described as a little shy, Booger certainly didn’t take long to make himself at home.

“You would never know he is the new addition,” his adopter says. “Booger has brought our family so much joy.”

And to think, it all started with a family on vacation, a first-time visit to That Fish Place – That Pet Place, and one little kitten with white paws and black toe beans who was simply too special to leave behind.

Adoptable Cat of the Month: Meet Zig!

Some cats have a way of making themselves at home wherever they go. Zig is definitely one of those cats.

This handsome 6½-year-old gentleman got his name from Zig’s Bakery in Lititz, where he was originally caught in a TNR trap. But there was one small problem with the plan to return him to life outdoors: Zig was simply too friendly!

A former farm cat, Zig has a few battle scars from his earlier adventures, but these days he much prefers the comforts of indoor life. Give him a good window seat, a favorite person to hang out with, and plenty of head and neck rubs, and Zig is one happy guy.

Zig is currently staying at The Felted Fox in East Petersburg, where he has been front and center during their kids’ summer camps. He has shown everyone there what a friendly, gentle and easygoing companion he can be, and he would make a wonderful family pet.

Zig is also FIV-positive. FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) affects a cat’s immune system, but many FIV-positive cats remain healthy and live long, happy lives with normal veterinary care. It is primarily spread through deep bite wounds and is not a risk to people or other types of animals.

And in case you’re wondering about the photo: yes, Zig really does have all four legs! One was simply busy making some midair biscuits when the camera caught him.
