Adoption Story: The Cat Who Never Says No to an Adventure

Odin
Odin

Some cats are happiest watching the world through a window. Others want to experience every bit of it. That perfectly describes Odin.

From the moment he arrived at Centerville Pet Rescue, we knew he was a cat with a zest for life. Friendly, playful, and endlessly curious, he loved meeting new people, investigating every toy, and making friends wherever he went. He wasn’t just looking for a home—he was looking for someone to share life’s adventures. It didn’t take long for him to find exactly that.

Today, Odin has settled beautifully into his forever home, where every day seems to bring something new. Whether he’s riding in his kitty backpack for a walk through the park, relaxing on the deck while his family plans for a future catio, or chasing his favorite wand and catnip toys, he’s always eager for the next adventure.

When the excitement winds down, Odin is happiest close to his people. He sleeps at the foot of the bed each night or claims the pillow beside his favorite human, follows them from room to room, and keeps up a running conversation with his trademark chatter.

He’s even made a fast friend in Koda, the family’s Golden Retriever-Husky mix. Together, they’ve turned the backyard into another place to explore and enjoy. His family shared,

“Thank you, Centerville Pet Rescue, for helping us fulfill a missing spot in our home. We love him so much already—he is the purr-fect addition to our family!”

For every cat, “happily ever after” looks a little different. For Odin, it means new places to explore, people to follow, a canine best friend, and a pillow beside the people who love him. We’d say that’s an adventure well worth taking.

Cat Tip of the Month: Let Your Cat Choose Their Safe Spot

Fireworks may be exciting for us, but to cats they can sound like an unpredictable threat. When the booms begin, resist the urge to pull your cat out from under the bed or out of a closet. If they’ve chosen a hiding spot, they’re doing exactly what instinct tells them to do.

Instead, make sure their favorite hiding places are accessible, close the windows, and go about your evening calmly. Most cats feel more secure when they’re allowed to ride out the noise on their own terms. Once the celebration is over, they’ll usually emerge when they feel safe again.

It’s a simple reminder that sometimes the best way to comfort a cat is to let them decide what comfort looks like.

Adoptable Cat of the Month: Zig: -A Quiet Companion

Zig
Zig

Not every cat is looking for the spotlight. Some are simply looking for someone to share it with.

Meet Zig, a handsome six-year-old black-and-white gentleman who has perfected the art of being the calm, steady presence every home needs. He’s happiest spending time with his favorite person, soaking up head scratches and neck rubs, and quietly keeping you company through whatever the day brings.

Zig is FIV-positive, but don’t let that discourage you. FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy, happy lives, and Zig is a perfect example. He’s healthy, content, and ready to trade life in an adoption room for a forever home where he can truly settle in.

If your idea of the perfect companion is a cat who would rather curl up beside you than create chaos, Zig may be exactly who you’ve been waiting for.

You can meet Zig at The Felted Fox in East Petersburg, where he’s patiently waiting for someone to discover what makes him such a special friend. Sometimes the best companions aren’t the loudest or flashiest—they’re the ones quietly waiting for the right person to notice them.

Volunteer Profile: Heather Grady

Heather
Heather

Some people grow up loving animals. For Heather Grady, that love has been a lifelong calling.

Raised between the town of Mount Joy and her family’s five-acre farm in Manheim, Heather has been surrounded by animals for as long as she can remember—even riding horses by the age of two. But it wasn’t just the family pets that captured her heart. If someone had a kitten or dog they could no longer keep, there was a good chance Heather would show up ready to give that animal a home. Thankfully, as she puts it, her parents were always great sports about it.

That compassion continues to guide her today.

Heather joined Centerville Pet Rescue as a foster volunteer in 2024 and has quickly become someone we can count on for just about anything. Whether she’s helping at fundraising events, keeping the adoption center stocked and organized, opening her home to foster cats, or jumping in wherever an extra set of hands is needed, Heather is always ready to help.

Outside of CPR, Heather also runs a small pet food pantry for families facing difficult times. She started the pantry during the COVID-19 pandemic after struggling to find the food her own pets needed. Realizing she couldn’t be the only one in that situation, she began collecting donated pet food and litter to help others. Today, the pantry continues to support pet owners in need and, when supplies allow, even helps other rescue organizations.

At home, Heather shares her life with several rescued cats Cocoa Bear, Fleury, Jephy, Rusty and Schmedley. She also adopted a dog from the PSPCA Lancaster Center named Murray.

Volunteers like Heather remind us that rescue isn’t just about finding homes for animals—it’s about building a community of people who are always willing to lend a hand. Thank you, Heather, for the compassion, dedication, and heart you bring to Centerville Pet Rescue every day.
