CPR: One of the Best Places to Get a Pet in Lancaster County!

2025 LNP Readers Choice Awards

Centerville Pet Rescue Voted One of the Best Places to Get a Pet in Lancaster County!

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with our supporters — Centerville Pet Rescue has been voted one of the Best Places to Get a Pet in Lancaster County in the 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards by LNP | LancasterOnline!

Each year, the Readers’ Choice Awards shine a spotlight on the community’s favorite businesses, organizations, and services across the county. Voting took place from May 5 through May 30, 2025, and the results reflect the voices of thousands of local residents.

This recognition means so much to our team and volunteers. It is a true celebration of the dedication we put into rescuing, caring for, and rehoming cats in need. But most of all, it reflects the trust and love the Lancaster community has placed in us as a safe, compassionate place to adopt a furry family member.

At Centerville Pet Rescue, every adoption is more than just finding a home — it’s about creating happy futures for both cats and people. From tiny kittens to special-needs cats with incredible spirit, we strive to make every match meaningful and lasting.

Thank you, Lancaster County! Your votes show us how much our mission matters, and we couldn’t do it without your continued support.

If you’re considering adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating, now is the perfect time to get involved and be part of this award-winning rescue effort. Together, we can continue to change lives — one cat at a time.

Volunteer Spotlight: Donna & Jana — A Mother-Daughter Rescue Dream Team

Donna and Jana Volunteers

When you think of dedication, heart, and teamwork, it’s hard not to think of Donna and her daughter Jana. Since 2018, this mother–daughter duo has been two of Centerville Pet Rescue’s most reliable and passionate volunteers, giving their time and energy wherever it’s needed most — from fostering fragile kittens to helping at spay/neuter clinics, adoption days, and fundraising events.

How It All Began

Their journey with CPR started back in 2017, when they discovered three stray kittens in their neighborhood. With few resources available, Jana managed to find homes for two. The last little one was brought to Centerville Pet Rescue’s setup at That Fish Place – That Pet Place, where adoptions were still being held in the middle of the store. After a few visits, the kitten found a loving family — and Donna and Jana found their calling. Soon after, they began fostering kittens for CPR, quickly realizing just how great the need was.

Teamwork in Action

One of their favorite parts about volunteering together is being able to “tag team” when fostering neonatal or very young kittens. Each has different strengths, and working side by side makes the hard work of caring for fragile babies less stressful and more rewarding.

  • Donna’s favorite job: helping in the adoption room, guiding families toward their perfect cat or kitten.

  • Jana’s favorite job: assisting at spay/neuter clinics and supporting medical care for cats in need.

Their shared memories tell the story of their dedication: for Jana, fostering a blind kitten named Sweetness was an unforgettable experience. For Donna, it was the bottle baby who refused to give up his bottle — happily holding it himself even when he no longer needed it!

The Reward

For Donna, the most rewarding part of volunteering is when adopters return with photos or stories of how much they love their new companion — especially if it’s a kitten she once fostered. As she puts it, volunteering is “Challenging, Exhausting, Rewarding.”

Beyond the Daily Work

Their impact goes far beyond individual cats. Donna has served as an official volunteer since 2018, became a CPR Board Member in 2020, and is known as a “super foster” always ready to pitch in. Jana, also a volunteer since 2018, is part of our surgery team, a super foster in her own right, and a vital part of fundraising efforts.

Together, Donna and Jana are an unstoppable force for good.

From Stray to Sopita: Estella’s Happy Ending

Estella Kitten Photo
Soup (Sopita)

When Estella first wandered up to a home in York City, she was just a 10-week-old kitten trying to survive on her own. Her little body told the story—dirty, matted, missing patches of fur, and covered in fleas. Life on the streets hadn’t been kind, but Estella’s luck changed the moment she arrived at Centerville Pet Rescue. With some much-needed care, she finally had the chance to be safe, warm, and loved.

That chance turned into forever when the Calero family welcomed her home. They renamed her Soup—or affectionately “Sopita”—and she has blossomed into the energetic, playful, and fluffy girl she was always meant to be.

Today, Soup is thriving. She loves “pets” (the Caleros say it’s her favorite thing!), chasing string toys, and zooming around the house with her new feline sibling. She’s a little cautious with fast movements and isn’t crazy about being picked up, but her family gives her the time and space she needs to feel secure.

Her personality shines brightest in her quirks—Soup watches TV, adores chicken-flavored treats, and occasionally tries to nibble on the computer screen, much to her family’s amusement (and mild panic). With her beautiful fluffy coat, big tail, and sweet spirit, she’s now showered in love every single day.

The Calero family says it best: “Everyone in the house loves her. She’s our beautiful Sopita.”

Offsite Adoption Location

We’d like to give a big thank you to our friends at The Felted Fox for partnering with us as an offsite adoption location! Their creative, welcoming shop is more than just a place to find beautiful handmade treasures—it’s also a space where rescue cats get the chance to meet their future families.

By opening their doors to Centerville Pet Rescue, The Felted Fox helps us reach more people in the community and bring more cats one step closer to a forever home. We are so grateful for their support and for making a difference in the lives of pets and people alike.

Cat Care Tip

With cooler nights and shorter days arriving, your cat may be seeking out extra warmth and comfort. Help them adjust to the season by creating a few cozy resting spots around your home — think soft blankets, a heated bed, or a perch near a sunny window.  Not only will this keep them snug, but it also gives them a safe space to watch the leaves fall and birds gather for migration. A little seasonal comfort goes a long way in keeping your kitty happy and healthy!

Cat of the Month: Rosie

Rosie Relaxing

Meet Momma Rosie

When Momma Rosie was found outside a Good Samaritan’s home in York City, she wasn’t alone—she had five tiny kittens clinging to her side. Abandoned, yet determined, this brave mama poured every ounce of love into keeping her babies safe. With her gentle purrs, quiet strength, and endless devotion, she raised them into healthy little bundles of joy. Now, it’s Momma Rosie’s turn to be cared for.

Momma Rosie is the sweetest girl who simply wants attention from everyone she meets. A gorgeous polydactyl tabby (that means she has extra toes!), she’ll happily make you some biscuits if you’re lucky. She gives daily kisses, is wonderfully snuggly, and would love nothing more than a cozy human to curl up with.

Rosie Loves Attention

When she isn’t asking for pets, you’ll find Rosie snoozing in her cat tree on a soft blanket, birdwatching from a sunny window, or showing off her playful side with wand toys. She’s a queen who knows how to balance fun, affection, and relaxation—ready to bring love and joy into her forever home.

A Note About FeLV
Momma Rosie has tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV), but she is considered regressive FeLV. This means her body has largely fought off the active infection, and while the virus is still present, it is dormant. Regressive FeLV cats often live long, healthy lives, and they are far less likely to develop FeLV-related illness compared to cats with progressive infection.

For Rosie, this means she should still either live as your cherished “one-and-only” or with other FeLV+ cats—but it also means her outlook is bright, and she has every chance to enjoy years of love and comfort with her future family.

Momma Rosie is currently fostered in York, PA. Ready to meet this sweetheart or learn more? Complete an Adoption Application!
